Bitflow VoIP was created to address the newest innovation in global communications; Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). VoIP in simple terms is the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based networks. The Internet Protocol (IP) was originally designed for data networking; however, the success of IP in becoming a world standard for data networking, has also led to its adaptation to voice networking. Instead of sending documents over the Internet, a voice packet is sent back and forth, enabling a “phone call” to be made. As early as 1996 VoIP technology has been available. However, it has taken until now to develop infrastructures and hardware that can support and stabilize the signal, in order to offer this technology to the masses.
The economic advantages of VoIP are enormous. VoIP is one of the fastest growing segments of the telecommunications industry. By using voice packets rather than circuits, VoIP gateways convert the voice from the originating PSTN network, into a digital signal, allowing it to be sent via an IP network and sliced into smaller packets. By sending a voice call, sliced into smaller packets, many
simultaneous calls can be sent over the same channel, at the same time, by the originating gateway. The receiving gateway then re-assembles the packets into the correct order, converting the signal to analog, and sending to the receiving user via the traditional PSTN network. The average VoIP call requires about 8K of bandwidth, making a 64K line able to handle up to 8 calls simultaneously. Using the Internet connection for both data traffic and voice calls can allow
consumers to get rid of one monthly payment. In addition, VoIP plans do not charge per-minute fees for long distance, and offer many features such as voice mail, call forwarding, conference calling and caller ID as standard.
Over the past 10 years companies and organizations have invested heavily in developing IP networks, to support web sites, e-mail, Intranets, and the basic infrastructure for taking care of day-to-day business. The good news is, even though VoIP is a “new” innovation, all that is required is a PC connected to the internet, and using one of three methods for connecting to a VoIP network; using a VoIP telephone, using a normal telephone with a VoIP adapter, or using a computer with speakers and a microphone.
